MY STORY

Art and soul

I can't draw to save my life. As a lifelong writer, I've always worked in words, not art.

In 2007, I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art while on a business trip in NYC (I try to sneak off to an art museum on every business trip). I was mesmerized by the Tiffany mosaic fountain. As a single mom, my life was busy; I tried to sign up for a few mosaic workshops over the next few years, but they would cancel or I'd have a conflict.

Fast forward to 2022. My mom, a wonderful artist, had passed a few months before. I asked for and received a mosaic starter kit from my boyfriend, and I dove in. Breaking beautiful glass to create new things. Making beauty from brokenness.

I often think my mom left me an interest in making art on her way out of this realm. And I'm honored to receive that gift.

Since then, I've worked hard to develop skills and an artist's eye. I've had the honor of participating in exhibitions all around the Metro Detroit area and, this fall, I'll be at ArtPrize, the world's largest art competition, in Grand Rapids. It's all thrilling.

I love working with glass -- its luminosity and beauty. I love the process of creating. And I'm inspired by beauty and pathos.
